| Andy Johnson Vice - President |
2007-2009 |

An avid volleyball player (three nights a week in three different community leagues), in April 1997 Andy decided to give up his Wednesday night Portland YWCA volleyball league to join the chorus and sing as a baritone in the MGMCs 5th anniversary Pride concert at Merrill Auditorium,
to see what it would be like. My late partner and I were loyal audience fans for years, and with some encouragement from Paul Bedard, a friend who had recently joined a few months earlier, I decided to give it a try. And hes continued singing in every concert since. It was, and continues to be, a very wonderful and many times profound experience for me musically, personally and socially. Its difficult to describe the immense feeling of gratification I get from being a part of such a talented, creative, friendly and caring group of guys who love to entertain their audiences with fun and very often emotionally moving performances.
The big brother of three younger sisters, Andy grew up and attended school in Fairfield, Maine, where his Mom and most of the family still lives. After two years at the University of Maine in Orono, he graduated from Michigan State University with a B.A. degree in instrumental music and a concentration in natural resources. On the first day of class, the professor for an environmental interpretation course I was taking wondered aloud (and a little incredulously) as to why a music major would be taking this basically natural-resource-majors-only core curriculum offering. Kind of feeling being put on the spot, I blurted out, So I can lead campfire singing really well. For a moment I didnt know if he thought I was being a wise-guy or what, but the whole class burst out laughing - him included. Andys passion for the environment and recognition of the special unique place that Maine is, led him to go to work for the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, first in Portland and now in Augusta, where he is a 24 year veteran of the Bureau of Air Quality.
Andy still keeps his hand in instrumental music by playing guitar and keyboards in a DEP band that performs at department and other state agency functions, as well as having played at the Blaine House on a couple of occasions. Ive also been fortunate to have had the opportunity to accompany some soloists and the chorus a few times on guitar, and to be part of the Cabaret pit band the past two years. Its been incredibly rewarding. He also enjoys taking part in some of the special choreography numbers the chorus does occasionally, where hes danced as a Sugar Plum Fairy as well as the other half of the Fred and Ginger number with Robert OBrien (O.B.) which half he wont say. Lets just say I was the dipee, not the dipper, and leave it at that!
A resident of Auburn for the past 13 years, Andy shares his home with his best friend Adam and their canine and feline companions Emily, Molly, Tibby, Tabby and Joanie. Im honored to serve on the Board as a singing member of the chorus, and look forward to working together with my fellow Board members, Miguel and the membership as MGMC enters its second decade. |
